Was her name Mackey? And thats where she was. She said, You saw her in your dream. I said, Holy shit, I said, you think that was her? She said, It could have been her. I said, Then she went like that and chased me out of her house. She said, That was her. I had all the plasters done. And Im looking at looking at it and I said, You know, thats the last house. But that was biga big, two-bedroom condo. I mean, you talked about it, when you were a kid, that it was this big house that you would see when you were out on, Daller: Its a part of the history of Staten Island. So because it was done like the French did, I never had to pay tax, or only tax on a two-story house, instead of a three-story. So I found this big beautiful, French, mansard roof, big Victorian house in Tottenville. But some strange things did happen in the house. The only thing that will save this house as a bulldozer! [laughs] But anyway, I saved it. I could. Burke: Oh, God, Mario come out here all the time. And so I had all that stuff in my apartment. And it did all the dental workany kind of dental work and everything was manufactured there. They bought a house. And there was a big flight of stairs that went across the big porch across the front of the house, posts. Daller: As a matter of fact, we had an event years ago. Sell the other half to Billthat was my brother and you and George, move with me to Florida. So we all thought that was a great idea. Restored the building, looked around, come down, bought this house from Mrs. Seguine, and then moved out of the bar and restaurantbecause I had a room upstairs in it. And that was a couple people from Tottenville, caused all that. So it didnt matter. And they did. And Luis Caizares painted that. And then when you could see the house, it was a goddamn mess. Put through the years, people recognized it and everything. According to the funeral home, the following services have. Its still there. Because he lived right here, lived right here on Staten Island. Daller: Yes. But you do have Chris thats upstairs that lives in the servants quarters. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. And she was laid in a dress with a big lace collar. Im gonna save this house. I bet. So they. A couple of years ago, I painted them this color, didnt I? I said, I still have friends that myour parents met before we met. What is a shame is some of the mansionsthe really, really ornate mansions that were torn down. Thats ittheres no more of them. Q: And you said that you restored the garden there too? Now what are you going to do with this? So I got this on the front porch somewhere, nailed to the house, butdoesnt matter. And I got these. Ticonderoga. Big fluted columns with big Corinthian capitals on them. Oh god, that was a gorgeous mansion. Burke: Yes, Mario come out all the time. Daller: Oh, theOh God now, whats it called? See Photos. And all the time when all the lilacs would come in the spring, and the whole place would smell of lilacs, its gorgeous, still is. And, then I gotwhod I get from the city? I dont know what the hell Ill do if you do that. He did the White House and everything. And I loved it. Burke: Well, look at the mansion! He painted that for me. Daller: From Michael and Jennifer, your nephew. And right there in front of the windows was a coffin with all the flowers around it and everything. So a couple of days later, I have a dream. And it was the most amazing party. I said, No, no, no. He said, when he was moving here, he told the people there, he goes, Im moving. How the hell they got to the right people, I dont know. And where to get the good buys, and all that kind of thing. Q: So its budgets and the contractors, all that stuff. Christ, a good ten, twelve years. You cant ride anywhere but in a circle arena. I mean, I could do a little woodwork, but I wasnt a carpenter. So my sister Bess said, Well, come on, lets go to Florida. And that still is, today, one of the great places around here, the Old Bermuda Inn, and John still owns it. Because I certainlyI never passed up a bargain. Theres a ghost in there. And I said, Well, I dont believe in ghosts. Take a walk. I said, No, no, Im gonna save this house. He said, Oh! I was born right in the hospital across the street, and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. And my fatherwe were quite wealthy, growing up. Q: You mentioned that the South Shore has changed in the last few years. And he saw the way to help out, and I said, well form a board and what well do is well continue to have fundraisers in order to support the house, but we need additional help and support as well. Yes, Mrs. Mackey. So its a shame. Wantagh, Seaford . He also discusses the donation of the Seguine Mansion to the Historic House Trust, and his vision for the ongoing maintenance of the home and property. Burke: Oh, it was all overgrown with undergrowth. WHEN George Burke was growing up on Staten Island in the 1930s and '40s, he used to ride horses with a pair of sisters, Elizabeth and Belle Seguine. Well, on theon the fireplace there, those two big candelabras, theyre Meissen. But Ive got to bring that portrait down and put it above that fireplace and get rid of that painting thats there. And I had the money to do it, and I said, You know, let me do it.. Thats the usual setup, I think, for historic houses. I found a beautiful place in Tottenville and I opened it and called it the Tidewater Inn. Valley Stream. So I went up with Father Tom and I had to take care of all those Eskimos, if any of them got sick or hurt this or that. So as long as I own it, I own it, theyll pay for it. But he did a lot of the work for you. I, being the youngest, of course, seeing everybody growing up. That was something that you had restoredis that right? I fixed it up. Always, in that vase in the hall. Developers. Daller: No. The Secret Service, as well as a Cohasset school accounting specialist and the superintendent, are determining how much the operation cost the town. Q: Can you give me an example of one of the things that you worked on together in the house? Burke: And that was called the Tidewater Inn. But those things, I couldnt. And thats what where all the water, for all the laundry, and all that kind of stuffnot the drinking water, the working waterwould come out of that big cistern, and would go intoand the pump and everything, its still down there, connected to that thing out there. Most of the furniture thats hereI never furnished the house until I owned it. So I figured, oh, shit. Id come back up and I could still smell it in the hallway. Burke: One was a necklace with a heart on it. She left things there. Im only a salesman in a department store. I said, and its going to take a lot of money to put that house back together. She said, Well, Im going to help you all I can. And I said, But why would I fix a house I didnt own? And she said, Well, why dont we talk about that. She said, If youre interested in buying it, I will make the arrangements that you can own it. I loved Alaska. Just as long as its saved and its here. In fact, my mother worked there. She came and did a lot for the draperies and everything here. She was living in the house untilshe owned it until she died, and then I would take it over. But things that, well, were thatyou needed carpenters that knew, that were good carpenters. Unfortunately. Put a candle right in the middle of that floor and go take a walk. But it looked like an attic with the roof like that and everything. George James Manger , 100, of Staten Island died on May 4, 2022. So when I got it, of course, the old kitchen was inI had knocked it down because it was all falling apart. Burke: No, who gave me that? And she kept, George, please, go save my house. So I stayed there, worked for him for years. Thanks very much to you. . Daller: Well, its just the fact that the South Shore has gotten very built-up. And I just got a call from all my lady friends saying that my house is falling apart. Good God! They cant just say, The doors are open for anybody, just walk in! Somebody will walk in, and say, Oh, I like those chairs, pick them up, and take them, and theyll be gone. Staten Island and the South Shore is the only place where people can still move, be in a country feeling, and build what they want to build, and have a garden and have a lawn and, you know, they can be in the country and still be in the city. And Ill invest in a couple of other things that will give me a nice little income, and I wont have to worry about it. Q: So what was it like when you had the house finished and furnished? I cant think ofdoesnt matter, the name of the people. And as I said, for a thing of whiskey or a bottle of wine, theyd give you anything, because none of them have had it for years and years. Utica. So that makes sense. Lookit, I saved the police station and the two buildings next to the police station. Q: Was it Mario that suggested the life tenancy agreement? The oldwhat the hell was itgrocery store. That woman, she lived in riding clothes! It was so overgrown. Its going to hell. The fact that the Seguine familythis was the farmhouse, their mansion was in Rossvilleand thats long gone. And that went for years. So I went around and looked and looked and I said, You know, I could open a restaurant. And I walked around and I found a couple of nice places. But under that porch was the basement. And the only problem with that was the kitchen was downstairs. But that was a condo. February 15, 2023 (81 years old) View obituary. Then she got to the point where she couldnt keep it anymore. Daller: That was the house that had ghosts. And its more expensive to keep her horses there than it was here. Q: Did you keep up a conversation with Mario Buatta about. The walkway going to the beach, its still there, where the house was. But, with that money, I paid this house off. That poor horse. Burke: Yes, but just think of that gorgeous, bigthe mansion that this was their farmhouse, up the street here, that was gorgeous. My big old Victorian house is saved, and thats still there. George Burke. I want it now. I could never get it. And then one of my brothers had just gotten out of the military. Daller: Then you got rid of thatbut those are the early days. Q: Was it a similar style? So a lot of the things that you acquired to furnish the house were in poor condition, and then you have them reupholstered and restored. I mean, after it was finished, who cared? Hes done it for forty-plus years, now its time to give back. That was the mansion. Do you remember that? Q: And so all these items went upwalked up the stairs and were, carried back down the stairs. My brother, he come in and he said, What are you, nuts? Q: So he knew how much work it would take over the years and what a relationship would be like to. And that makes more sense to people when they see something. But I forgot what the other two things were. He was born here. Because we went to about every Air Force base in Europe there was, and I got around to see everything. He was in the Air Force. So I made sure it was filled in with dirt the rest of the way, so I wouldnt have that water getting in the basement. Thank you so much. It doesnt happen on the North Shore because were very condensed and its a dense population. Lives in Rochester, New York. And all this beautiful stuff, I used to put in a big box. And then the Historic House Trust will use it as well to understand whats important to you about maintaining the house. I dont need The Death of Cleopatra hanging above my fireplace. And they were going to pay for everything if they owned it. So I took that out of the brick and I got some cement, put it all back in, put the wall back up. Kitchens were always built in a house outside by themself, and a breezeway going to the house, because the kitchens would always burn down. Burke: I think that waswhod ya call-it got me involved with that. Well work it out, one way or another. And so the two of us started and we madecalled it the Old Bermuda Inn because John loved Bermuda and he was putting a lot of money in it. Burke kept records of the work, most of which he completed himself and financed the through the sale of his business, the Tidewater Inn. Burke: Well, the house, actually, from the outside, is aoh, shitthe name of it went right out of my head. Yes, and I had bought the house, but I couldnt have the house and move in until she died. I lived in one room, for almost five years. But the other house, one of his friends was pushed down the stairs. So I went around to all the nursesof course, I was in the medical departmentand I asked all the nurses, What are you doing with your stamps? Daller: Oh, yes. Because people will come in, and therell be four or five people and somebody will walk by and just pick this up, and pick that up. Burke: years ago, because I couldnt afford to keep it. Im going to get gifts now because Im staying in the house and Im going to fix it up.. So whenever the big surgeons traveled, I always traveled with themtraveled all over Europe. And right outside the window right here, is a great big round, thing thats all brickgreat big round thing, big as this room, covered-overand thats where all the water from the drain pipe from the roof would go in there and fill it, and it was called a cistern, and that was connected to the kitchen downstairs. And with the money that I made from there, I put it right back in the building. And I only have so much money being what I am. So he said, Dont worry about it. But thats part of whats been going on down here. And a lot of it got given away, got lost. Its all part of history, and theyre just destroying it every way they can. Burke: the Historic House people did give me a big bronze plaque to put on the front of it. And I went around and we all hadyou were only allowed to buy two bottles of wine and a bottle of whiskey, or something. Theyre going out for the garbage. I said, No, no, no, Im trying to take them. So I took them and I had them all redone and reupholstered, and here they are. Theres none of the spirits. And the house was like this, a big piece with two big wings. Well, Bess, and my brothers wife, Evelyn, never got along. Probably. And when I seen it all over there, and when I seen the British people were poor as church mice, they were selling everything. And thats where I had all this wonderful carved stuff from the Eskimos that they gave me. And in order to have food and such, youd have to bring it up the back stairs. But that was the cistern for doing all the laundry and everything in the basement. We have a choice in having a caretaker come in also to maintain it. I hope it isnt that the people who have access come in and empty it because Ive had people say, Oh, when youre not here, Im taking that painting, and Im taking that painting, and I want that couch, you know. Staten Island. And she was laying with her arms, like that. Youre coming with me. So Id say Okay, Murphy, lets go! She was something, I mean. And people were coming from all over the island. They talk about Tottenville, its all McMansions. Everything has changed, all the old houses are torn down. And they copied that from France, because thats what it was, it was the French mansard. Will they appreciate it? Burke: So, my sister Marge, and my sister Bess, would come over and help me. And they said he had the box, and took it with them. And they were slate, the roof, and by walking on the slates, they broke and they slid off, and wherever they slid off, the rain poured through because it was holes. It was a mess of a mess. Burke: Oh, yes. But when he was in Europe, he rode. Burke: But what were we going into before I got into the architecture? A necklace with a gold heart that opened like a. If you were at the water looking up here, you couldnt see the house. Sure, Id no idea of ever owning his house because I had a beautiful big house in Tottenvillebig French style house. She said, Now you can save it., And I said, Well, I can save it. Tell me when you want me to start. I wanted to know some more details about the life tenancy. And she said, George, do you know who this is? and with her big Southern accent. And a couple of my friends came as bartenders for me. Thats the only thing in the house left from the Seguines. Burke: Anyway, she was well known here on Staten Island. You can retire. Burke: Yes. Burke: Oh, and then the house, when I bought it, everybodythe real estate lady, she wouldnt come in. And one day, I was sitting in the dining room. George, now in his eighties, donated the house in exchange for a life tenancy, which has made living here a lot easier. I restored the whole housewell, how long did I live there? Well, by this time, I had a lot of money. I probably gave it to Bess. Well, do you know what your preferences are? So I went out and I said toI had two roommates, and I said to my roommates, Wheres my box? And they said Oh, well, Sergeant Joiner came in and took it. I said, Oh, no! I went running out. Before he left, the house was fine. And I renovated the bar, I renovated the other side, my two sisters came to work for me, running the kitchen and the dining room. So then I said, well, what the hell am I gonna do? And that way, it wouldnt burn the houses down. And if theyre gonna make a museum out of it, theyre gonna have to pay somebody to greet people and take them on tours. Q: Can you tell me about moving the collections here, out of storage and out of your sisters houses into this house? But I restored all that. Daller: But it feels like home. And thats what this house is. Im giving nothing away. Half the railings were gone off the porch, and the column was falling over, and, oh, Jesus. Burke: Oh, well, the Eskimos up there would give me beautiful mukluks and all kinds of things. Its Meissen. Yes. I cant remember her name. And we were great friends. You dont have to worry about, sleeping on your couches and all that kind of stuff, and, you know, pulling out fake beds, and that kind of stuff. So itll be part of Staten Island that people, maybe fifty years from now when theres not a spot left, theyll all come out and theyll look and say, Wow, this is what it used to be.. Burke: And its great when you have friends come, you have extra bedrooms, you can put them all up. On a goddamn pillared mattress sleeping? Of course, I went to school here. Daller: But when you got it, it really was in need of repair. And one day. And with the Air Force, I enjoyed every minute. And Id go downtown and Id wheel and deal for a bottle of whiskey. Soon, nobody had room in their house to store anymore of my stuff. And Id go in and Id buy all the liquor with those stamps. All that gorgeous porcelain, like the Flower Sellers Childrenits a big piece like that. And that was only one of them. Daller: Yes. And then you could walk under the porch out into the garden.
